A Love Woven in Thread: A Honeymoon Tartan Story
Share
Some stories are meant to be written, and others—well, they’re meant to be woven.
When we welcomed Michaela and Jordan into our workshop, we knew we were in for something special. They arrived fresh from a fairytale stay in Michaela’s ancestral castle, still glowing from a surprise handfasting ceremony she had arranged for them. Though they had been married for two years, life—and military schedules—had delayed their honeymoon. Now, they were finally here, celebrating love, heritage, and new beginnings in the most meaningful way possible.
And what better way to honour their journey than by creating a tartan that told their story?
Designing Their Own Legacy
For Michaela, tartan was already woven into her family history. Her ancestors had a clan tartan, but Jordan’ family didn’t have one of their own. So, in the spirit of their new life together, they decided to design a tartan that blended their histories, values, and hopes for the future—a pattern uniquely theirs.
The workshop was the perfect fit for their honeymoon. Coming straight from their handfasting ceremony, they sat down to translate their story into colour and thread. They filled out prompt cards, reflecting on the elements that mattered most to them—memories, traditions, emotions, and symbols that defined their journey together. From there, they carefully selected colours that represented those moments, slowly watching their vision come to life.
Even Jordan, who admitted he wasn’t typically “artsy,” got into the process, finding joy in the hands-on experience. With guidance, they wove a small sample of their tartan, a tangible first step in what would become a lifelong keepsake.
From Concept to Heirloom
As the workshop came to a close, Michaela had one last idea: commissioning a full piece in their new family tartan. And not just any piece—a baby blanket.
This blanket would hold many meanings. First, it was a way to remember their honeymoon and solidify their family tartan as something real, something they could touch. Second, it was a Christmas gift for Jordan—a piece of their story he could physically hold. And finally, there was an old wives’ tale: place a baby blanket under the Christmas tree, and by the next Christmas, you might just have a little one wrapped up in it.
Superstition or not, the sentiment was clear: this tartan wasn’t just about the past and present—it was about the future, too.
Weaving Love Into Every Thread
Stories like Michaela and Jordan’ are why we do what we do. Tartan is more than just a pattern; it’s history, connection, and love woven into fabric. To be part of their journey, from designing their family’s first tartan to weaving it into a cherished heirloom, was an absolute joy.
And so, as their blanket finds its place under the Christmas tree this year, we can’t help but smile. Because whether or not old traditions hold true, one thing is certain: this tartan will be part of their family’s story for generations to come.
Safe travels, Michaela and Jordan—and may your love, like your tartan, only grow stronger with time. 💙💚💛
