Helena

Helena is a handweaver who enjoys combining a love of colour with sustainable principles. From training with silk weavers, who have family ties with Spitalfield Weavers, to her own family heritage of weaving in Thuringia, Germany. Making was always in her blood!

A passion for colour and disruption of traditional woven fabrics has been a passion, transmuting irregular Fibonacci-inspired stripes inspired by the Scottish Landscape with highlighted patterns from her home in Glasgow. These pieces, made from waste from mills, illustrate a woven art only able to be produced with a playful sense of colour and skill from a handweaver.

Each piece has the world at its pivot during each stage of the making process. Helena specialises with combining the worlds of Mathematics, Science and Art. Using research and chemical knowledge to hand dye mill waste, to ensure longevity of colour and minimal dye and water wastage, mathematically calculates warp and weft in addition to creating bobbins with recycled paper.
